Our Club

The Rotary Club of Marlborough and District was founded in 1965; it all started with a few business and professional men meeting for lunch at the Ailesbury Arms Hotel, Marlborough once a week for a chat and as a break from the normal weekly routine. We had no guest speakers but occasionally one of us would give a short talk. The eventual outcome of these meetings was that the District Extension Officer of Rotary asked if he might talk to us about the possibility of forming a Rotary Club, and the rest is history!

What is Rotary?

Rotary is an International Organisation of professional and business people who meet every week for fellowship and service. It is non-political and non-sectarian. There are over 1.2 million Rotarians in over 28,000 clubs situated in 170 countries around the world. Rotary adapts to and embraces many local customs and traditions. Rotary is represented by every known business and profession and is uniquely qualified to tackle the difficult issues of our times - alleviating hunger and poverty, gauranteeing children a safer place to live, and giving people the skills they need to live a productive life.

Rotarians apply a Four Way Test to the things that they think, say and do:

* Is it the truth ?
* Is it fair to all concerned ?
* Will it build goodwill and better friendships ?
* Will it benefit all concerned ?

What do we Do?

Thanks to the excellent support from the people of Marlborough and the villages in our district since June 1965, Rotary has supported many Local, National and International organisations and causes.

Locally there is emphasis on the young and the elderly. Support for "gap" year, mock interviews and public speaking and Young Chefs competitions for the young. The elderly have enjoyed many social events with visits to the theatre and country drives, and support local community organisation and facilities.

Nationally a long list of charities are supported including Naomi House Children’s Hospice, Macmillan Nurses, Marie Curie, Arthritis & Rheumatism Council, Heart Foundation, Tools for Self Reliance and Hope and Homes for Children. Internationally there has been help for eye camps, clean wells, disaster aid, limb centres and many others including the Polio Plus programme.
